Les années folles terminées, la musique française aspire encore à l’insouciance, plaide pour le divertissement et l’enthousiasme populaire. Quelques décennies plus tôt, dans l’opéra le plus célèbre de Saint-Saëns, elle se parait des ravissants joyaux de l’Orient pour nous entraîner dans une enivrante bacchanale. Et parce que la musique aime traverser les frontières, Tchaïkovski puise dans l’un des plus célèbres contes de Perrault et des frères Grimm la matière de son deuxième ballet, au sein duquel Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider a choisi les morceaux les plus séducteurs.
